Are Vaccine Mandates the Future of the Franchise?

With the COVID delta variant emerging and with up to 30% of the US population reluctant or unwilling to take the vaccine, is it time for private companies to act by making it a requirement for their employees?

On a small business radio show this week, self-proclaimed “King of Franchise” Joel Lebava believes that asking your employees to get vaccinated is essential to your company’s future especially 18 months after the pandemic. In fact, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has ruled that “employers can legally require a COVID-19 vaccination for employees to return to the workplace and can offer incentives to encourage employees to take a chance.” Many government agencies and large employees such as United Airlines and CVS require all employees to be vaccinated in order to return to the workplace. This is especially important for companies that require their employees to be personal for customer service.

Joel Lebava on Vaccine Mandates in the Franchise Business

Vaccine demand is supported by most workers (52% according to a recent Gallup poll), but much of the workforce (29%) is staunchly opposed, with all the reluctance to get vaccines in the country, Joel believes small business owners need to boost take it into their own hands. . He says that “if individual franchisees don’t require vaccinations for all of their employees, they could lose their business; if it’s going to be like last winter, more businesses will shut down.” He believes that companies need to look long term; “They are already understaffed and can’t afford the staff getting sick.”

This step is not without challenges. Joel insists, “It’s going to take a lot of courage – a lot of employees will refuse this – they will have to risk losing employees (which they are already lacking) but if we don’t, we will never get out of this pandemic.” Joe knows we need to provide accommodations for employees who have health or religious issues.

Joel argues that the vaccine has become too political; “We already have vaccine passports – the yellow cards that every child needs with all their vaccinations before they go to school!”
